First Trimester AnesthesiaLocal Anesthesia:The patient is awake during the procedure. The physician administers medication which relaxes the cervix and reduces discomfort during the procedure.
IV Sedation:The physician administers medication which reduces pain and anxiety.
Asleep:The anesthetist administers medication and provides care so that the patient is asleep while the physician performs the procedure.
Second Trimester (13 to 21 weeks)Evaluation, counseling and preparation are conducted in the office. The procedures are performed the following day at the Medical College of Virginia under general anesthesia.
Medical AbortionEvaluation is thorough to insure that the patient is a good candidate for this means of abortion. Then medication is administered so that the pregnancy is ended at home. Close follow-up is provided.
